LM 1st and 2nd year (Reading and Writing)

The first class test for both years will be held in the week starting Dec 10.

This means Dec 13 for Year One and Dec 10 for Year Two.

The class test will be held at the normal time for the respective lessons (1st year Dec 13, 12.00 to 14.00; 2nd year Dec 10, 13.00 to 15.00).

The room has yet to be decided.

The second class tests will be held at the end of the second semester (date to be decided).

The first-year test involves writing an opinion essay, choosing from four or five possible topics. No specific preparation is required.

The second-year test involves writing an essay about the issue/s raised by a relatively long single article. The essay should demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the article itself and the ability to discuss ideas and problems on a sophisticated level.

LM I class (12.3.18)

For those of you intending to come to the lesson on 12 March, please watch the Black Mirror episode entitled San Junipero (series 3 episode 4).

NOTICE FOR LM I and II students

Just to make it clear: there are no definitive marks for the first (January) class test for each year. What I do is to give you an indicative mark (indicative, that is, for you and for me) not expressed in numbers but using a system of  A / B / C (with the addition of plus and minus), where A = Good, B = Acceptable, with room for improvement, and C = Borderline Fail. More important than these impressionistic marks is the feedback I will be giving you, ideally in person (in class or during office hours), but if necessary by e-mail. Accordingly, no marks will be communicated until the restart of lessons. The final mark in June takes this first class mark into account but only once you have completed both tests.

You also have the option of taking the final exam in June or September instead of the two class tests. It’s up to you.

Please be on time.

CLASS TESTS (LM I and II) – VENUES AND TIMES

NOTE: for LM 1st and 2nd year the class test is obviously only open to those who took the first test in January.

Everyone else must take the exam on one of the dates available (summer session: 29 May / 15 June).

LM I and II

As explained at the beginning of the course, a mark for the Reading and Writing component can be obtained either by taking two class tests (one in January, one in May) or the final exam (the dates for this year start from May 2017 and correspond to the normal exam timetable).

For LM I the format for both the tests and the exams is the same: two hours to write one essay on a question chosen from among four/five topics. Typically this involves writing an opinion essay, so no specific preparation is required.

For LM I the format is slightly different. You are given a passage to read and are asked to discuss the issues it raises. Again, no specific preparation is required.

AVVISO PER GLI STUDENTI DEL TERZO ANNO DI INGLESE (Anno 2016-17)

GOLD Advanced Coursebook (with 2015 exam specifications)
Sally Burgess, Amanda Thomas (published by Pearson)

LM I and II (Reading and Writing):

The first of the two class tests in essay writing will be held on the following dates:

LM I: Thursday Jan 19 (Aula C)

LM II: Monday Jan 16 (Aula D)

Both tests last two hours.

First year: One essay to be chosen from four/five possible titles. You will be asked to express an opinion, so no specific preparation is required.

Second year: You will be asked to read an article and to comment on the issues it raises.

You also have the option of taking the final exam in June or September instead of the two class tests. It’s up to you.

Please be on time.
